Isabella Lopes calls a towering crane her second home. The 22-year-old is the youngest full-time operator at her worksite in Surrey. "I love the big, busy push days. I enjoy the responsibility and the liability aspect." Her career path has taken years of mentorship and persistence. The province says women are also, now more than ever, interested in pursuing a career in the skilled trades. There has been an over 9.4 per cent increase in the number of female apprentices in B.C across all trades in the last five years. The province says there has also been an "impressive" 29 per cent increase in the number of female apprentices in trades where women have been historically underrepresented, such as in the construction electrical, carpentry and plumbing trades.
