As we come to the end of Cook Islands Language Week we take a look at the Kuki Airani maru 🌺 “In the Cook Islands we call it ‘maru’ so that is reclaiming that art form. Because we didn’t have any record of a maru in the Cook Islands but we know that we were heavily tattoo’d and women wore it on the legs, so it just made sense that we had a very similar design sense to the ‘malu’ of Samoa” - Therese Mangos on the Cook Islands version of the malu.
