🎄 If you’re in Denmark tonight, you may notice something special - it’s J DAG (or J-Day)! It’s the annual bar celebration that was created to celebrate the release of Tuborg’s annual Christmas brew or julebryg. Most Danish brewers release a Christmas beer or juleøl, but Tuborg has been the one to commercialize it into a giant nation-wide event. It started in 1981 after Tuborg decided to capitalise on their very successful Julebryg commercials from the year before. It featured a beer-chasing Santa and the retro marketing images are a familiar part of the yearly celebration. It’s a fun Danish tradition that we were happy to jump into when we moved to Denmark. As Americans, we would describe it as the ways that many bars celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo with something like Santa Con or Running of the Santas 🎅 It’s a little bit of a spectacle and a little bit hyped, but it’s all innocent and seasonal fun. Mostly, it’s a nice way to kick off the Christmas season that we were happy to jump into when we moved to Denmark. 🍺 It’s always the first Friday in November 🍺 The Christmas brew cannot be tapped or opened until 8:59 pm 🍺 Tuborg staff ride an old-fashioned wagon around like a sleigh and run into bars handing out merchandise and beer 😵 One of the coolest facts about J Dag is that it was originally celebrated on the first THURSDAY in November, but too many students (and probably workers too) were skipping class the Friday after and those who did attend were not in academic mindsets. For that reason, it was moved to the first FRIDAY in November and the rest is history. Will you be celebrating? What do you think of J Dag and the Christmas brews? #skål #denmark #denmarklife #copenhagen #jul #expatindenmark #livingindenmark #danishbeer #julebryg #jdag #jday
