Don't buy bamboo, it's not a healthy or good material - let me explain why you should avoid it. Bamboo gets marketed as this sustainable, eco-friendly fabric. But the truth is, you can't just take bamboo stalks and magically turn them into soft, wearable cloth ā€”Ā or mold it into othe rproducts. To transform bamboo into fabric, it has to go through a bunch of intensive chemical processes that are super toxic. First, the raw bamboo plant matter gets dissolved using harsh solvents like carbon disulfide. This stuff is dangerous - it's been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and brain damage in factory workers. Definitely not a "green" process. After that, they bleach, dye, and treat the bamboo pulp with other nasty chemicals like formaldehyde to make the fabric feel silky and smooth. But all these toxic processes pollute the environment around the bamboo production factories with hazardous chemicals. Here's where it gets even worse. Those chemicals don't ever fully wash out of the bamboo material. When you wear bamboo clothing, residual formaldehyde, bleaches, dyes, and other chemicals can actually get absorbed right through your skin. So while bamboo fabric might feel soft on the surface, chemicals used in the production process can still be hiding in the material, exposing you to substances associated with cancer, infertility, hormone disruption, and other major health issues. Doesn't sound so zen now, right? And if you think you're avoiding exposure by not wearing bamboo directly on your skin, think again. Those same hazardous chemicals can still come out in the wash and get absorbed by your other clothes in the laundry. Yuck! The takeaway here is - skip the bamboo fabric altogether if you care about your health and buying eco-friendly products. Opt for truly non-toxic fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, and linen instead. Bamboo seems all natural and peaceful, but behind its soothing image is a production process full of toxins. I know they market it as a green material, but bamboo fabric is far from good for you or the environment. Look for alternate textiles if you want something both gentle and safe! #greenwashing #Sustainability #ecotips #bambootoxins #bamboo

5 reminders to help you practice sustainable living each and every day šŸŒŽ Sustainability can often seem like a daunting journey of ā€œdo this, or donā€™t do that.ā€ But it all starts with imperfect action and being willing to learn and change how we view our consumption habits, as well as advocating for change on a larger scale. These reminders have helped me continue to learn and grow through my sustainability journey, and I hope they help and inspire you to do the samešŸ˜Š 1. You canā€™t buy your way into sustainability because the most sustainable thing is the item you already own (even if itā€™s not a sustainable item). 2. Ask before you buy to help reduce overconsumption and so that youā€™re investing your money in items that will actually serve a purpose in your home or in your life. Before buying new, check if you can find it secondhand or reuse/repurpose something you already have. 3. You can take action at home! Whether itā€™s composting, finding plastic-free alternatives, repairing items to give them a second-life, or even watching a good documentary to continue learning about our planet ā€” little things add up. 4. While corporations will always have a higher carbon footprint than you, our individual actions ABSOLUTELY matter. As consumers, we have buying power with every single purchase we make, but we also have the power of voice to stand up for the change we want to see. 5. GET OUTSIDE! I think getting outdoors and seeing nature for what it is will just make you fall more in love with caring for our planet. Whether thatā€™s your local neighborhood or visiting a state park, there is beauty all around us. If youā€™re wanting to get started on your sustainability journey but donā€™t know where to begin, start with finding a cause youā€™re passionate about! My gateway was learning about fast fashion, but it could be anything from ocean conservation + plastic pollution to animal welfare šŸŒ± Follow along this Earth Month for more sustainability content focused around how we can all continue to take more action as individualsā€”and let me know if there is anything specific you want to see / learn! šŸ“ #earthmonth2023 #sustainableaction #sustainabilityinaction #Sustainability
