Yes it’s traumatising being trapped in a body that someone else has autonomy over and is trying to end the lifecycle of. No we are not scared of them or mad at them for having been in such pain that they wanted to stop existing. And no, they did not have the capacity to understand that there were other real people who live in this body that they’d have killed along with themselves. They’d never try again now that they know. And because we now know what’s going on they never have to handle so much pain alone again. They are not evil, they were not selfish, they were responding to incredible physical and mental pain the only way they knew how to, pain our nervous system decided they would be the ones to carry so that we could be protected from it. Suicide attempts are not a symptom of weekness, but of having to be far too strong for far too long. In honour of suicide prevention month please take some extra time to remember that community support and receiving real help are what makes a difference, if you love someone who’s had struggles related to suicide please let them know that you are happier with them around and that they are not a burden, and remember that it isn’t your fault that they struggle with these feelings, it doesn’t mean they love you any less, suicidal ideation distorts the mind and prevents it’s victims from being able to consciously and somatically remember the good in their life, they are not ungrateful for you and you are enough.
