The Turkish Shaman belief continues to exist in the rituals of โKamโ (Shaman) through the burning of selected plants as incense in Siberian native, ancient, and contemporary Turkish communities. Incense was burned for various purposes in ancient Turks. Among the main reasons for incensing were belief-based and spiritual ceremonies, healing rituals, protection, and cleansing purposes. For example, during the Gรถktรผrk Khaganate period, Turkish Kams would perform this ritual by burning incense to protect themselves, ward off evil spirits, and increase their chances of success in battle before sending soldiers off to war. In Hakas Turks, during incensing, the shaman carries the bowl containing incense around individuals, and they try to draw the smoke, including their heads, onto themselves using their hands. It is believed to cleanse negativity and expel bad spirits (energy). The incense plants used by shamans for โKamโ generally vary depending on the region. Some of these plants include sage, thyme, rosemary, lavender, burdock, cedar, laurel, and mullein.
