This painting shows indigenous American Mohawk warrior Thayendanegea, also known as Joseph Brant. He played an important role in assisting the British during the American War of Independence, leading ‘Brant’s Volunteers’, a unit which consisted of both Mohawks and Colonists. Brant used his diplomatic skill to navigate the spaces between the two cultures and worked to attain protection and compensation for Mohawk lands, travelling to Britain in 1775 and again a decade later in 1785. The painting portrays this unique identity in its depiction of clothing: he is shown wearing the garb of both cultures, the Mohawk ‘gustoweh’ headdress alongside a blanket draped over his shoulder, representative of British trade goods. Brant does not look directly at the viewer, but is shown as gazing across the horizon, perhaps surveying the land or his unit of volunteers. This painting captures an important cultural moment in its depiction of Brant, and is on display in the National Portrait Gallery in London. #historytok #LearnOnTikTok #historytiktok #arthistory #LearnOnTikTok #arthistorytiktok
