A violin is usually built from two different kinds of woood: ⭐️ Spruce for the top. It is light, yet longitudinally strong and laterally flexible. The most prominent external feature of a spruce top is the vertical grain. This are the annual growth rings of the tree. ⭐️ Maple for the bottom, scroll and ribs. For the spruce, it is important that ➡️ the growth rings are close together ➡️ the wood has been air-dried for at least 10 years, better more ➡️ it was properly sawn out and split ➡️ and also the weight of the wood is important. When it comes to maple, the selection is quite different: ➡️The growth rings are relatively equally hard. ➡️Focus is on the flames. ➡️Ideally, one would like to have deep flames that interact nicely with the light. These are Maple's growth pattern that creates a wave structure with alternating light and dark "flames".
