“Beast” is a long overused term. However, it fit the bill for Sharrif Floyd like a glove. At 6’3, over 300 pounds, and yet as quick as a cat, Floyd was a beast. Plain and simple. Coming in as a highly sought after recruit, Floyd played interior D line for the Gators from 2010-2012. With his incredible combination of size, strength, and quickness, Floyd dominated the line of scrimmage time and time again. He was in the backfield nearly every play it sometimes seemed. Floyd was a crucial part of the legendary 2012 UF defense, which is easily one of the best units in program history. Floyd started strong in the NFL as well but tragically, his career was cut very short due to a botched medical procedure. In October of 1994, in a true rarity in all of sports, Georgia came to Gainesville to play Flroida in the Swamp. The two rivals had a home and home series in the mid 90’s. At the end of the first half of the 1994 game, Georgia was driving but with less than 15 seconds left in the half, UF LB Darren Hambrick picked off a pass from UGA QB Eric Zeier. Somehow, Hambrick was able to run through the entire UGA team and tightrope the sideline and take it in for a pick 6 as time expired on the first half. At halftime of the 2008 BCS National Championship Game, Florida found themselves in an unexpected defensive battle against Oklahoma. The game had been an absolute dogfight up to that point, and despite the tied score, it felt like Oklahoma was the better team. OU had been stopped twice while being inside the 5 yard line and no points to show for it. A 7-7 game easily felt like it could’ve been possibly 21-7 OU. Florida had sputtered on offense overall, and Tim Tebow had thrown 2 picks while throwing only 2 for the entire season prior up to now. Tebow then gave a halftime speech for the ages which clearly galvanized his team (despite Louis Murphy’s best efforts to ruin it by make believing he was a parrot). Florida played a masterpiece of a second half, nearly shutting down Oklahoma’s vaunted offense entirely, outscoring them 17-7. Along with some very key plays made by Percy Harvin, Tebow willed his team to victory. He rushed for over 100 yards, and he made some very tough throws which all led up to the final nail in the coffin, the jump pass. Florida has a great history of receiving tight ends. Kyle Pitts, Aaron Hernandez, Cornelius Ingram, just to name a few. When discussing the all time great TEs in UF history, Jordan Reed deserves to be right at the top of everyone’s list. An extremely gifted athlete, Reed started off as a QB, and he showed some promise. However, he switched to TE starting in 2011 and then truly became a household name. Reed utilized his deadly combo of size and athleticism while also showcasing very impressive hands and route running from a TE, all to become a dominant force at the position. Reed was all SEC in 2012, and then went on to have a very productive career with Washington in the NFL. Although it may be considered common knowledge amongst Florida fans, others, particularly the younger crowd may not know that Coach Steve Spurrier was a QB for the Gators in the 1960’s. Aside from being a 6 time SEC champ and a National champ as a head coach, Steve was an all-american and a Heisman trophy winner as a quarterback. Spurrier did it all for the Gators and punctuated his Heisman campaign with his iconic FG to win the game against Auburn, known simply as “The Kick.” Spurrier went on to lead the gators to an Orange bowl victory over Gerogia Tech following the Heisman, and he went on to play for the 49ers and the Bucs in the NFL. #floridagators #flordiagators #CollegeFootball #uf #footballhighlights #trending #viral #fyp #swampkings #stevespurrier
There have been very few quarterbacks in UF history and perhaps even SEC history that stack up in sheer talent to Doug Johnson. Johnson had an incredible arm, a straight cannon. And he showcased it time ans time again throughout his career in the late 90’s and the tail end of the Spurrier era. Doug certainly had a Brett Favre quality to him, meaning his big arm and style of play led to a lot of turnovers as well. This, as well as some mild off the field issues, all resulted in an overall bittersweet career for Johnson. However, you take the good with the bad when you have someone so talented. Florida took home two major bowl wins, an eastern division title, and many memorable victories over the course of Doug’s career as a starter. Doug’s arm alone earned him a journeyman career in the NFL.
