I graduated from UW Seattle and made more money than most UC Berkeley Computer Science majors because I had a ton of referrals to top tech companies. Grinding for a 4.0 GPA is a bad strategy — build a good resume, and then make friends and get referred so real people will see it.

This means that even though those big-name companies used to be easier to get interviews with, things have changed a bit.
