My HONEST journey to GP I could tell you I’ve wanted to be a GP since I was a little girl but that would be a lie, so I won’t 🙈 In fact, I never dreamt about being any sort of doctor!! I was told by teachers that because I was a ‘good-all rounder’ and that I liked volunteering that I should apply for a Medicine & so I did … I am so grateful for all my experiences because they’ve made me who I am today … but gosh a lot of it was tough! From the sleepless nights of Medschool revision to the sleepless nights of a Night shift work! I don’t miss either ! 🌸 In Medschool / FY1 I loved Oncology but didn’t know if I could hack the demanding work rotas. 🌸 I found my FY2 GP job really stressful & unsupported so that left me confused 🌸 When I was in my FY2 year I was suffering with quite severe anxiety. Unfortunately, I wasn’t diagnosed until a few years later & at the time I remember crying in a meeting and being told I was ‘too empathetic’ to be a doctor … 🌸 I benefitted SO much from having time out of training. Although I felt lost at first, wondering if I would have to change career, it gave me much needed headspace so I could ask ‘what do I actually want ?!’ 🌸 when I re-visited specialising in GP I realised that this suited me really well. So much variety & continuity of care plus a big focus on work-life balance that isn’t as common in other specialities 🌸 despite my struggles with my mental health & some other disappointing supervisors, I haven’t looked back 💙 #gener#generalpractitionerg#gpr#generalpractice #rcgpa#MentalHealthAwarenessa#mentalhealthstigmae#anxietye#careeradvicee#careerdecisionse#careerchangee#anxietysupporth#endthestigmahestigmaofmentalhealth
