French, and which led to the occupation of much of northern France by English and Burgundian troops. At the age of thirteen, Joan of Arc confessed to having seen Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, and declared that her voices exhorted her to lead a devout and pious life. She was accused of heresy and sentenced to die at the stake. Joan of Arc did not retract it, but reaffirmed her revelations. On the morning of May 30, 1431, she was tied to a stake and burned alive in the Old Market Square in Rouen, northwestern France, and her ashes were thrown into the River Seine.
