Joan of Arc, “Jeanne d'Arc” (Domrémy, France, 1412 - Rouen, 1431) She was a Saint and French heroine. Born into a wealthy peasant family, Joan of Arc's childhood was spent during the bloody conflict framed in the Hundred Years' War that pitted the Dauphin Charles, the eldest son of Charles VI of France, with Henry Vl of England for the throne. French, and which led to the occupation of much of northern France by English and Burgundian troops. At the age of thirteen, Joan of Arc confessed to having seen Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, and declared that her voices exhorted her to lead a devout and pious life. A few years later, she felt called by God to a mission that seemed beyond the reach of an illiterate peasant girl: lead the French army, crown the Dauphin king at Reims, and expel the English from the country. She was accused of heresy and sentenced to die at the stake. Joan of Arc did not retract it, but reaffirmed her revelations. On the morning of May 30, 1431, she was tied to a stake and burned alive in the Old Market Square in Rouen, northwestern France, and her ashes were thrown into the River Seine.
