One year ago today, after several years waiting for the right time, I picked up Bob my first hawk - an 8 week old baby kestrel that had been reared by a pair of Eurasian hobby’s! I knew I was in for a bit of a challenge, having not been too hands on with birds of prey other than Freddie my tawny owl for quite a long time. But with the support of my bird friends and the beginnings of my wildlife education business I knew I was ready and it was time to take the plunge. I have had the best time with this little kestrel. He has helped me learn so much about the training of birds of prey and given me the opportunity to progress myself as a handler, always striving to reach new levels with him. I still have things to improve (my lure swinging skills for one 😂) but I am really pleased with how we’ve done so far. The best thing I’ve learnt is to just allow him the freedom to develop his skills naturally - let him fly! He’s also been such an important ambassador for his species, having met thousands of people over the year, and has always taken it in his stride. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect bird for the job! My confidence has really grown through flying Bob, and we have a great amount of mutual trust and respect.
